The city was found in 1496, by the brother of Christopher Columbus – Bartlomiej, he called it San Felipe de Puerto Plata. At first this place was just a sea port, but the city has been rapidly developing. Locals hunted smuggling and interacted with the French and British pirates. Tourism began to develop in 1978, and the first comfortable hotels of Puerto Plata appeared for the foreigners’ convenience. Their number grows every year.

They are evenly located around the city, far from its center.
